I had Banshee setup on Hiawatha on a different installation, but when I do the same simple steps(on XenialDog, based on Ubuntu 16.04) of installing hiawatha, php, banshee, and either mysql or mariadb(I have tried both) the setup says "Error connecting to database" even as mysqladmin ping says mysqld is running, and mysqladmin status gives appropriate information. Help?

Sounds like a system related issue, not a Banshee related one. Since I can't see what's going on at your system, I don't know the cause.
